so, we got ourselves a baby girl! i'm a little behind in getting this blog set up, since she's already almost 4 weeks old, but here it is! hazel elizabeth wright demas was born on december 13, 2013, at 8:34 pm. she showed up at 19.75" long and just a hair under 8 lb. she was 12 days early, so she would have been quite a beefcake if she had kept percolating for the full term!
since she remained resolutely breech (head-up) the whole time jana was pregnant, despite many attempts at various methods of getting her to turn around, we had a c-section scheduled for thursday the 19th. we were getting ourselves acclimated to that idea, and adjusted to the reality that we'd have a baby in just over a week (little did we know...). on friday the 13th, jana was enjoying her *first* day of maternity leave, planning for her last week of pre-baby life, when she noticed some goings-on. when i got home from work, we talked about said goings, and it seemed like a good idea to call the nurse to get some advice. they told us to come in to get checked (50-50 chance that jana's water had broken, they said), and we arrived at the hospital around 6 pm. by 6:30 they had confirmed that her water had indeed broken, and they were starting the preparations for surgery! as we adjusted to the new reality of actually having a baby *that night* instead of the following thursday as planned, the process progressed... and at 8:34 pm out came little hazel!!

back in the birthing room (as opposed to the OR), age 1 hour |
even though i knew how the whole process worked, it was still quite an amazing shock when jana's bulbous belly transformed into a beautiful little person before my eyes. but it worked!! we spent three nights in the hospital getting acclimated to babycare, and for jana to recover a bit from the surgery before heading home.
